What struck me as odd about the Save the tree octopus site was that I didn't see any names. They didn't site experts or eye witness accounts of individuals.
I think it would be very easy to be fooled by websites. This one was written as an example and made easy to spot. A real fake may use much more suttle deception. Maybe claim fake names or experts. If you are not applying a web verification tool you could be fooled.
I have not personally been unsure of websites. I have not used the internet for research very much tho.
I plan on making my students aware of the fact that there are fake websites out there. It never really occured to me and it may not have to them either.
I want to boil down what to look for to some easy to use tools.
